The term 'conteisa' is the Piedmontese word for 'quarrel' and refers to the historic dispute between the communes of La Morra and Barolo for possession of the Cerequio land. By Italian law, this wine is certified to be a Nebbiolo Langhe D.O.C., and the final blend was 92% Nebbiolo and 8% Barbera which was aged for 12 months in barriques followed by 12 months in large oak casks. The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by four generations of the Gaja family. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the winery's current owner.
Wine Spectator
Offers fabulous aromas of blueberry and lilac. Full-bodied, with a solid core of ripe fruit and round, caressing tannins. This is deep and concentrated, yet wonderfully balanced. Superb. The best Conteisa after 2000. Best after 2010.

Good full red. Sexy, perfumed aromas of mocha, brown spices, minerals and flowers. Suave and silky, with lovely life and definition to the raspberry and spice flavors. This has bright, very well-integrated acidity and a strong tannic spine, giving the long, juicy finish superb grip for the year. Turned more tannic with aeration, but there's enticing invigorating minerality throughout. Another standout for the vintage. 93+

Wine Advocate
The 2003 Conteisa, from the Cerequio vineyard in La Morra, is especially intense in this vintage. It is a rich, full-bodied Conteisa made in a sweet, super-ripe style, with outstanding palate presence and well-integrated tannins. In 2003 the floral, spices notes that are the hallmark of this vineyard are somewhat attenuated. Still, all things considered, this is a lovely effort. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2019.
