Fattoria Petrolo Toscana Torrione 2006
  |

BN#274508 |

Torrione is made entirely from pure Sangiovese grapes, including old vines from the 1970s. The yield per plant is notably restricted (max 2.5 lbs per vine plant), allowing full concentration of the grapes. The wine is aged in French oak barriques, one third new, for approximately 15 months. The resulting wine is simply gorgeous! Pure, deep and balanced.
The Petrolo estate was bought by the Bazzocchi family in the 1940s and since the mid 80s has been headed by Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust with the assistance of her son Luca who is now managing the winery. The technical agronomist is Carlo Nesterini, the oenologist is Stefano Guidi and since June 2002, and Carlo Ferrini collaborates on agricultural and vinification issues.
Wine Spectator
Very pretty aromas of flowers and berries, with hints of currant. Full-bodied, yet refined and elegant, with silky tannins and a long, caressing finish. A polished wine. Already delicious, but will be better with a little bottle age. Best after 2010.
Score: 92.

Wine Advocate
The 2006 Torrione (Sangiovese) is another in a series of consistently outstanding wines from Petrolo. The generous, soft-textured 2006 Torrione possesses captivating aromatics that meld seamlessly into a palate of ripe red fruit. This beautifully-balanced wine reveals gorgeous inner perfume and tons of balance. It is not to be missed. Torrione is mostly Sangiovese but in some vintages a small dollop of Merlot and/or Cabernet Sauvignon is added. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2016.
Score: 90.
