Charles Back's Fairview estate not only has acres and acres of rolling vineyards, it also has an active goat farm where they produce a range of local cheeses to distribute throughout South Africa. Established in 1693, Fairview had the most spectacular view of any winery we visited during our trip to South Africa in April of 2009. We met Charles Back whose family has owned and managed this estate for centuries. He was a positively lovely and gracious host, and we thoroughly enjoyed his delicious wines. This Pinotage is a superb example of the South African varietal. We found rich, sweet ripe fruit, very long flavors on the palate, and a terrific price/quality ratio. Pinotage was created in the 1920's when the Pinot Noir vine of Burgundy was grafted onto the Cinsault vine of the Rhône Valley. Cinsault is known as Hermitage in South Africa, hence the blending of the names : Pinot - age, which creates a rhyme of sorts.
