Evening Land has become one of the most talked about new brands in America. Making wine in both California and Oregon, Evening Land emphasizes the importance of vineyard location and terroir. This concept has long been embraced by Burgundians and the Bordelais, which the Evening Land project recognizes and emulates. La Source Chardonnay is made from vines that are planted in the lower section of the Seven Springs vineyard called the 'La Source Cross'. The 'La Source Cross' was formed by a river of lava that flowed from the top Western edge of the vineyard to the eastern belly of the hill before spreading out to the north and south. Soils in this area are of the Nekia series and the top soil is considerably shallower than in the rest of the Vineyard. Oregon has waited a long time to showcase truly exceptional Chardonnay, and it tastes like Dominique Lafon has brought his finest Burgundian skills to the table with this wine. He is the consulting winemaker with Isabelle Meunier, another respected winemaker with French roots.

Wine Spectator Bright, agile and light on its feet, delivering mouthwatering, mineral-drenched green apple and grapefruit flavors. Lingers impressively, suggesting this will only flesh out and get deeper with age. Drink now through 2018. 230 cases made. Score: 94. —Harvey Steiman, December 31, 2010.

Wine Advocate The 2008 Chardonnay La Source was fermented with native yeasts and barrel-fermented in 30% new oak with full malolactic fermentation. It reveals considerably more minerality accompanying flavors of spiced apple, poached pear, brioche, and hazelnuts. Super-concentrated with outstanding depth and precision, on the palate butterscotch and tropical notes make cameo appearances. This lengthy effort is likely to evolve in the manner of the finest white Burgundies. Score: 93. —Jay Miller, October 2010.
