The viticultural tradition of the Thanisch family can be traced back over 350 years: The oldest official documentation in Bernkastel is dated 1636. The quality of their wines quickly built and confirmed an outstanding reputation for the estate.
At the end of the eighteenth century the Thanisch family purchased the Berncasteler Doctor vineyard. The Berncasteler Doctor was named by Prince Boemund the second of Trier who was cured of a serious illness in 1360 after enjoying wine from this vineyard.
The estate enhanced its already prestigious reputation in the middle of the nineteenth century under the management of Dr Hugo Thanisch. Since this time the wines of Weingut Witwe Dr Thanisch achieved spectacular prices at international fine wine auctions. In 1988 one bottle of Weingut Witwe Dr Thanisch 1921 Berncasteler Doctor Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese was auctioned for 11,200 Deutsch Mark, which set a record as the dearest Moselle wine of all time. This record stands to this day. Incidentally, this 1921 Trockenbeerenauslese was the very first wine of its type ever made on the Moselle.
Serve this delightful Auslese after dinner with fine creamy cheeses, dried apricots and Macadamia and/or Brazil nuts for a special treat...
