This old vine cuvée made of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, comes from vines planted in 1932 and 1960 by winemaker Guy Ricard's grandfather. Guy is the third generation of his family to produce Rhône wines, and his wines exhibit a full-throttle, generous style. Parker is a huge fan saying, 'This is a sensational, reference point estate in Vacqueyras owned by Guy Ricard, whose wines have given me enormous pleasure for nearly two decades. From just over 42 acres of vines, Richard consistently fashions serious, well-made wines from the appellation’s limestone plateau and the rocky top soils known as the Galets Roules. The wines, which spend 18-29 months in tank and neutral wood, are undeniable bargains for top-notch southern Rhone wines.' Serve this beautiful red, which is similar to a Chateauneuf-du-Pape, with hearty fare such as grilled steaks, ribs and sausages, or with roasts and stews of beef, lamb and game.
Wine Advocate
An absolute whopper of a Vacqueyras is the 2007 Vacqueyras Vieilles Vignes, which comes from their oldest vines and is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah. Licorice, charcoal, blackberry and cassis notes, along with hints of lavender and pepper, jump from the glass of this inky/purple-colored wine. Layered and multi-dimensional, with superb purity, fleshy, concentrated fruit, and perfect balance, this wine has an uncanny ability to be substantial in size but remains surprisingly elegant, with admirable purity. This is a super Vacqueyras to drink over the next 7-8 years.
