This is the pure and delicious second wine of Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe, made from what the estate considers young vines (averaging 25 years is quite old by others' standards!). Brothers Daniel and Frederic Brunier have run the estate impeccably since taking over from their father in the late 1980's and the domaine was founded by Hippolyte Brunier in 1898. Telegramme is a blend of 90% Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, from vines planted in one of the highest stony terraces in the appellation, the Plateau de la Crau. This is fresh, elegant and balanced with wonderful balance, minerality and ripeness of fruit. Today the domaine extends over 173 acres and Robert Parker names Vieux Telegraphe one of The World's Greatest Wine Estates in his book by the same name. He states: 'Vieux Telegraphe is unquestionably one of Chateauneuf-du-Pape's most famous estates, and has one the most privileged terroirs of the appellation, with large, football-sized galets roules (the large stones of the region). Since the late 1980s when these two enthusiastic young men took over operations, everything I have seen suggests that Vieux Telegraphe is raising the quality to an even higher level. From a vinification perspective, they handle the wines impeccably; and from a stylisitic perspective, these wines will appeal to both the neophytes and connoisseurs of Rhone Valley vines.'
Wine Spectator
A fresh, pure, silky style, with red currant, licorice and shiso leaf notes gliding over the long, supple, minerally finish. Textbook for the vintage, with the fruit and minerality stretching out at the end. Drink now through 2017.
