This is a gorgeous 2007 Rhône red from the A.O.C. of Vinsobres, which from 1967 until 2005 was a part of the larger appellation named Côtes du Rhône Villages. Vinsobres is a high altitude village, lying between Nyons and Vaison la Romaine, and is a bit cooler than other Rhône villages. This gives the wines excellent acidity coupled with the intense ripeness of fruit achieved by the local varietals. Domaine du Coriançon is located on the sunny hills of Vinsobres. Made of 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvedre, we tasted and loved this deep, suave, chewy red. François Vallot, the owner and fourth generation winemaker, has been in charge of the estate since July 1976. He has continued his father’s policy, carefully choosing grape varieties enabling the production of high quality wines. The vineyards are cultivated according to biodynamic/organic principles, in harmony and balance with nature, taking into account the influence of the movement of the moon and the planets on the vines. The vineyards, spreading over 31 hectares, are situated on the terraced hills of Vinsobres, on the old alluvial lands (soft chalky rocks with stones). It is the most privileged part of Vinsobres oriented East-West with a maximum level of sunlight, while sheltered by the hills from the Mistral (the dominant north wind). The special microclimate of this region is Mediterranean, with mild winters and hot summers softened by a local wind named the 'Pontias'. We paired this wine with a simple dinner of Manchego cheese, kalamata olives, dried salami with green peppercorns and rosemary flatbreads, but we look forward to serving it with a juicy steak or rosemary-infused lamb chops.
Bottle Shop
A deep, radiant color with bright raspberry hues leads to a terrific nose of roasted fruits, cherries, purple flowers, herbs de Provence, ripe raspberries, licorice and spices, with more of the same in the mouth plus juicy, deep blackberries, minerals and vanilla notes. Powerful, long and sultry, this has a suave texture and velvety tannins. Drink 2010-2015+.
Score: 92.
Wine Spectator
Slightly brawny black currant, fig and blackberry fruit flavors are liberally laced with dark toast. A nice graphite edge keeps this honest through the finish. Drink now through 2011.
Score: 89.
