If Parker's phrase rings true, 'Life is too short not to drink La Mission Haut-Brion,' but the first label's price tag is a little steep for your budget, why not try their second label? This second growth estate uses younger vines from their plantings of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc, and creates this rich and concentrated offering. La Mission Haut-Brion is a historic estate founded in the 17th century, as well as being the long-time rival of first growth Haut-Brion, which is located across the street. Parker raves, 'What is evident is that La Mission Haut-Brion is a wine of first-growth quality. This is a great estate producing large-scaled, dense reds that represent the quintessential, full-bodied, scorched-earth Graves style. Moreover, the wines possess legendary aging potential. It is unquestionably one of the world's most singular and distinctive wines. In essence, life is too short not to drink La Mission Haut-Brion. And, La Mission Haut Brion’s second wine, La Chapelle de la Mission, has become one of the better second wines of Bordeaux.'
International Wine Cellar
Classic aromas of plum, raspberry, tobacco, smoke and warm stones. Sweet, lush and generous but with the brightness of the vintage. In an essentially easygoing style. Finishes broad and soft, with plenty of ripe, mouthcoating tannins and noteworthy persistence. 88-90
Score: 90.
Wine Enthusiast
