Quality-driven owner Elizabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased the Caparzo estate in 1997 which was founded in the 1960s; today, with winemaker Massimo Bracalente by her side, she aims to make top quality products using meticulous and traditional techniques. In fact, she was recognized by the Wine Spectator as one of Brunello's Best Producers in James Suckling's article, 'Cream of the Crop'. This Brunello di Montalcino is from the highly sought after 2004 vintage, and does not disappoint. Made of 100% Sangiovese Grosso (also known as Brunello) and aged in traditional, large Slavonian oak casks for 2 years, this Brunello has rich, concentrated flavors of wild berries, ripe plums, spices and earth notes. A wonderful match with roasts, grilled or braised meats, game or ripe cheeses, something as simple as a grilled steak seasoned with sea salt and rosemary can become magical with a great Brunello such as this one. Caparzo is the only estate-bottled producer of Brunello di Montacino to have estate vineyards on all five sides of the hill of Montalcino, ensuring balance of flavors, acidity and tannins, as well as providing the all-around classic style of Brunello in every vintage.
Wine Advocate
The 2004 Brunello di Montalcino reveals dark red fruit, flowers, licorice and oak in a medium to full-bodied style. The tannins are nicely balanced and the wine offers plenty of richness to match. Stylistically the wine is fresher and more vibrant than the La Casa, with a flavor profile that tends towards red rather than black fruit. It is a lovely effort from Caparzo. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.
