Originally an Italian varietal from Piedmont, the Bonarda grape has enjoyed great success in the rich soils and warm climate of Argentina. Bonarda is, in fact, the second most widely planted grape in Argentina, second only to Malbec. This great buy is made by the Altos Las Hormigas winery, a project conceived by 4 Italian partners who sought to produce value-driven wines with authentic Argentine flavors. The country of Argentina has a long history of Italian immigrants, who brought with them a passion for winemaking and cooking, as well as cuttings of the Bonarda vine. This Bonarda is made from grapes from the warmer regions of Rivadavia and East Mendoza, which gives the wine wonderful ripeness and supple flavors. Serve this food-friendly red with pasta dishes in bright tomato sauces, fresh tuna topped with chopped tomatoes and fresh cilantro or fine cheeses & tapenade.

Pure aromas of black cherry, licorice and mint. Juicy and bright, with well-integrated acidity framing the fairly intense black fruit flavors. Finishes with light tannins and good length. In texture and weight - and lack of oak influence - this reminded me of a cross between Dolcetto and barbera. And not a bit rustic for Bonarda.
Score: 88.

Shows nice dark, juicy plum, licorice and spice notes with a fleshy, open-knit finish. Tasty. Drink now. 8,000 cases imported.
