Soulful Spain
With wine production in Spain dating back to before Roman times, this region’s history is fascinating and full of soul … the wines have intriguing character, medium-to-full body, beautiful aromatics and great possibilities with food pairing. The most widely planted grape, Tempranillo, can take on many different styles, from resembling Pinot Noir, to Syrah, to Cabernet. Another indigenous grape is Garnacha, known as Grenache in the Rhône Valley of France, as well as Monastrell, or Mourvedre. Rioja still rules as the most sought after region and 2004 is a top vintage; Ribera del Duero is another important region and home of the legendary Vega Sicilia; Toro, a tiny region just east of northern Portugal, is in the midst of a strong revival and produces high quality, serious wines with immense structure and inky black fruit flavors. Jumilla is a landlocked area in the southeast, not far from La Mancha and has bargain-priced offerings as well as head-turning mid-priced wines. Typical foods from Spain include olives, saffron, ham, sheep’s milk Manchego cheese, purple garlic, salted cod, eggs, lentils, eggplant, figs, paprika, chicken, pork, lamb and beef.
