Portugal's Port Wines
When one thinks of Portughese wines, one tends to think of Port. Porto, as the Portuguese call it, is the lusty, dark sweet red wine fortified with brandy during fermentation, which is high in alcohol and served after dinner. The wine is ripe and sweet yet can also be dry, and is served after the main course with English Stilton blue cheese or dark, delicious chocolate. Among the most saturated blue/purple/black-colored examples of the vintage, Taylor's 2000 tastes like a young vintage of Chateau Latour on steroids. Aromas of graphite, blackberry liqueur, creme de cassis and smoke jump from the glass. Spetacularly concentrated and enormously endowed, with sweetness allied to ripe tannin, decent acidity, and layer ... more

The vintage Ports of Fonseca are 'perhaps the most consistently great of them all,' raves Parker. 'Not only do they have a striking fleshiness and powerful richness when young, but they retain that youthfulness for decades.' The prehistory of the firm of Fonseca Guimaraens lies in the late 1700s, in ... more

Dense ruby/purple colored, with an exotic, exuberant perfume of black fruits, flowers, incense and licorice, this unctuously-textured, full-bodied port is one or the most concentrated of the vintage. Sweet, expansive, and succulent, this large scaled, but remarkably well-balanced effort is surprisingly forward and accessible (by Fonseca's stndards). 2006-2025., Collectible

It is my opinion that Taylor's tawny ports are the best of their type. When tasted against other tawnys, they all exhibit more aromatic personalities, greater fruit and ripeness, and a wonderful sweetness and length. Although I find the Thirty Year Old Tawny admirable, I prefer the richer, more vibrant ... more
