Tardieu-Laurent Côte Rôtie 2005
Michel Tardieu is a big champion of minimal intervention in winemaking. He purchases wine on the basis of quality of the vines, and the old vines he uses must be more than 50 years old. He inspects the various vineyards of the Rhône Valley, he identifies the plots he is interested in, and then he will approach the vineyard owner to begin negotiations and make his style of rich, luscious, terroir-driven wines.
Wine Spectator
A gorgeous nose of warm whole-wheat bread, freshly ground espresso and molten chocolate leads to a dense palate of currant, plum sauce, black licorice and chocolate notes, all pushed by a dense, loamy, but well-defined finish where an iron note lurks. This will need some time. Best from 2010 through 2020.
Score: 95.

Deep red. Fresh red berry and cherry scents are complicated by fresh violet and graphite. Mineral-laced red fruit flavors offer very good focus and finishing snap, leaving a sweet cherry preserve quality behind. Tardieu says that this should be held, even though it's elegant already.
