We have always enjoyed the wines of the village of Auxey-Duresses, but they are not so well-known in the U.S.A. But when we tasted this, we HAD to buy it and give you a beautifully aromatic, supple, raspberry & gentle spice-infused red for salmon, pork & chicken dishes, especially with mushroom & berry accents.
The tiny village of Auxey is right in the center of the Côte de Beaune, in a valley behind the more famous village of Meursault. The soil is made up of limestone and clay, both suitable for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay respectively.
Jean and Gilles Lafouge produce high quality Meursault, Auxey-Duresses and Pommard wines. It's a small domaine, roughly 7 hectares, the top vineyard being a small parcel of Pommard, les Chanlins. The quality here is also very consistent and the premier cru Auxey-Duresses reds are always a great value with pretty fruit and lovely expressions of terroir. The quiet and modest Gilles Lafouge thinks that the 'La Chapelle' vineyard has the best exposure, which is the wine you have here.
