We discovered this small production gem at a big trade tasting in New York City. The wine stood out in the midst of almost 100 other Italian wines. Aged for 4 months in oak, you will find a velvety mouthfeel with red and black fruit flavors, licorice and subtle spices. Distinctive Italian grip and acidity make this wonderful for pairing with hearty Italian fare, especially grilled pork and red meats. The area where this wine hails from, Scansano, is a small village in the Tuscan Maremma, and is known for a large population of wild boar. At home, it would be perfect to pair with grilled pork chops, pork tenderloin in olive oil, garlic, sage and rosemary, or grilled sweet sausages. Also, in Scansano, the local strain of Sangiovese is usually called Morellino, which makes this wine a natural with any of your favorite Chianti dishes. Mangia!
